WOODPECKER PUNCHES HOLE IN GALVANIZED PIPE

IMG_2350

A pair of pileated woodpeckers are nesting in the neighborhood. They made a surprising choice for a home–a utility pole with a thick galvanized metal sheathing on one side.  Instead of taking the seemingly easier choice of just drilling a hole in the wood, these ambitious birds pecked right through the metal to get to the wood behind it.  Now there’s a nice breezeway that allows them to go up and down the pole behind the sheltering metal, eating to their hearts’ content without having to worry about attacks from the very aggressive hawks which hunt nearby.

What could possibly go wrong?   Umm, lightning strikes?
